A mandala is a meditation medium, it leads to the contemplation of an inner self. It also have a lot of religious meanings, some are associated with deities. You have as well Tibetan mandalas made in colored sand that are offered to Buddha and the universe when they are erased. In the structure of the traditional mandala, the central point is the ego, the origin and the end. The circle is the matrix, the world. The square represents the time and the rules, also the stability. Finally, the triangle gives life and indicates the action.
Personally, what i get of the meaning of mandalas in contemporary tattooing is mostly visual. And sometimes they don’t really have to be more than that. I fell in love with mandalas because i find them graphic, timeless and elegant. You may see there what you want, you can find in it a very personal or a mystical meaning. You may also want to see nothing in it except the beauty of the design.
I hope I was pretty clear, English is not my native language so sorry if some passages are strange.
See you around! :)
